Atomic Habits
One of the world's best-selling books about habits. The core idea: small, almost imperceptible changes produce large results over time – if you build the systems right.
Atomic Habits is James Clear’s book about how habits actually form, and how you can change them. It has sold many millions of copies worldwide, and appeared in Norwegian as Mikrovaner (Pilar forlag, 2020).
The main idea
We overestimate what we can manage in a day, and underestimate what small changes do over years. Clear’s point is that you should not bet on large, dramatic efforts – but on habits so small they barely call on willpower. Over time those are the ones that move you.
Another central point: focus on the system, not just the goal. It is not the goal itself that produces results, but the routines that land you there almost automatically.
What you get out of it
The book is built around four simple principles for building good habits – make them obvious, attractive, easy and satisfying – and their opposites for shedding bad ones. All of it is concrete and easy to put into practice.
Why it belongs here
Habits sit underneath almost everything we talk about on Spørretimen: how people last in demanding jobs, how you get through a long degree, how you keep up the training or the sleep routine. This is a practical way into exactly that.
